Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th August 2013

Souter, Tyne and Wear

Hurst Castle
Hurst Castle, Hampshire

The twelfth International Lighthouse Weekend intends to raise the profile of lighthouses, lightvessels and other navigational aids, promoting our maritime heritage.

Many lighthouses and places of associated interest will be open to the public, and there will be special events at lighthouses and lightvessels both at home and abroad.

There will be radio and press publicity before the event. Trusts and Friends groups will be able to use this day to raise awareness of their work and involvement in the preservation of the history of lightkeeping.

International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend was founded in 1993 by the Ayr Amateur Radio Group, and amateur radio operators around the world will be transmitting from lighthouses with the objective of fostering international relations. See ILLW List for the latest list of participants.

In 2002 the ALK decided to run the event to coincide with the amateur radio society.

If you would like to be involved, please let us know, so we can publicise your event.

Participating Lighthouses

Please note that opening times vary from lighthouse to lighthouse, and some may not be open all of the time, and that height, age or access restrictions may also be in place, so you are strongly advised to check with the relevant visitor centre in advance to confirm details.

The ALK cannot be held responsible for any errors, omissions or last minute changes.

The Acetylene Room will be open for tours of about 15 minutes each, from 11am to 4.30pm on Saturday 17th August. [Closed on Sunday].  It is regretted that the Lighthouse will NOT be open.

Hurst Castle will also be open (at a fee) where members can view the ALK Museum Rooms and the Trinity House Exhibition Rooms.  The Castle Cafe will be open for refreshments, as well as the remainder of the Castle.

In addition to the above and on both days, the Christchurch Amateur Radio Society will be operating inside the Castle and running a radio station;  if communications conditions are right, then members may be able to pass a greetings message to another lighthouse.  It should be noted that to gain access to this activity, an entrance fee [£4.50] will have to be paid to enter the Castle.

Anyone wishing to attend this event should drive to Keyhaven, and then catch the ferry [at cost] to the Castle – about a 10 minute trip and ferries depart every 20 minutes; alternatively members can walk (for free) to the Castle along the shingle spit, a distance of some 1½ Miles.
